How To Always Display File Details in Windows File Explorer

Getting all those pesky details to show up automatically in File Explorer on Windows 10 or 11 can be a bit weird sometimes. By default, Windows filters what info is visible, and you often have to manually turn on the details pane or dig through properties. If you’ve been missing vital info — like file size, dates, or even photo metadata — especially when managing lots of files, configuring File Explorer to show all that info by default can save a ton of time. Usually, enabling the Details pane does the trick, but sometimes it’s not turned on by default or gets hidden after updates. So here’s how to fix that once and for all.

How to Always Show File Details in Windows 10/11 File Explorer

Method 1: Enable the Details Pane via the View Menu

This method’s all about flipping the toggle directly from the toolbar, which is often the fastest way. If the Details pane isn’t showing up after you select a file, this is likely the culprit.

  • Open the File Explorer by clicking the folder icon on your taskbar or pressing Windows + E.
  • Click on the View tab at the top of the window.
  • In the ribbon, find the Show section. Click on Details pane. If it’s already checked and still not showing info, toggling it off and back on can fix weird glitches.

By doing this, the Details pane appears on the right side, showing data like date modified, size, and more, whenever a file is selected. Sometimes, this feature gets hidden after Windows updates, so it’s good to check it’s enabled.

Method 2: Use the Toolbar Button to Toggle Details Pane

If you prefer clicking buttons instead of menus, the Details pane button is what you need. Here’s how:

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Look for the icon labeled Details pane—it usually looks like a tiny panel with lines.
  • Click on it to toggle the pane on or off. On one setup it worked immediately, and on another, I needed to toggle it a couple of times to get it to stick.

This approach is handy if you switch between views frequently but want the Details pane to be ready whenever needed.

Method 3: Use Keyboard Shortcut to Toggle the Details Pane

For quick toggling, you can just use this shortcut: Alt + Shift + P. Not super obvious, but if you want a fast way without fussing with menus, try this. It tends to work pretty reliably once you get used to it, though on some rare machines, it might take a second or two to register. Seems like Windows sometimes delays updating the UI, especially after updates or if Explorer is busy.

So, once this is set, whenever you select a file — be it a photo, document, or exe — the details pane will update with the most relevant info. Not sure why, but on certain machines or Windows versions, you might have to toggle the pane on/off a few times or restart Explorer for the setting to stick.

Overall, enabling the details pane and making sure it’s always visible helps a lot if you’re constantly looking for metadata or file info without opening Properties each time. It’s a real time-saver, especially for power users or folks managing a huge chunk of files.
